I’m Greg Manuel, a PhD candidate in Performance Studies. My dissertation examines the impact of the 2018 Carr Fire on human lifeways and wild landscapes in rural far northern California. I hone in on divergent ways of paying attention — ranging from untrained sensory alertness to formalized scientific methodologies — that have been circulating in the wake of the blaze, asking how survivors manage to live, cope, and think in an increasingly flammable place. In my teaching and research, I strive to maneuver with curiosity across fissures between knowledge practices proper to the sciences, the arts, and the humanities. As a Graduate Writing Fellow, I look forward to helping peers from a range of disciplines gain their bearings, pinpoint obstacles, and locate sources of joy within the often-messy and sometimes-intimidating process of scholarly writing.
