Fellow – Keary Watts

Keary Watts is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Theatre and Drama program (IPTD). His dissertation, “Strategic Blackface: Re-deploying American Minstrelsy from Black Arts to #BlackLivesMatter,” tracks the use of nineteenth-century blackface minstrel conventions by black performers in later eras. He theorizes the theatrical process whereby artists and spectators locate insurgent modes of social action from within the repertoire of blackface minstrelsy and use it to challenge white supremacy. Keary has facilitated several teaching and learning workshops on the topic of teaching analytical writing, and he hopes to focus this expertise by helping other graduate students reflect on and identify their own approaches to writing.
