Fellow – Tyler Talbott

I’m Tyler Talbott, a PhD candidate in the English department, and my dissertation focuses on race, nationalism, and nineteenth century British literature. Before starting my current program, I worked as a graduate writing tutor in Maryland, which gave me the opportunity to mentor undergraduates across a range of disciplines with their academic writing. Transitioning from that context to working as a Graduate Writing Fellow at the NU Writing Place has been exciting for me, as I now have the opportunity to relate to peers about graduate-level research and writing. I also more frequently encounter writing that has a life outside of the classroom, and I enjoy modelling a reader’s response for writers who are speaking to many different kinds of audiences. Working with students to clarify what is original in their writing and how they can communicate the stakes of their projects helps me to focus on achieving these goals in my own research. In that way, The Writing Place has become a great model for me for how sharing and discussing writing is an indispensable part of the writing process.
